Course Pensions on Divorce: The Next Level for Family Lawyers


Taking pensions knowledge to the next level for more experienced family lawyers.

Pensions are often a significant financial asset in divorce proceedings and are one of the more complex issues that family lawyers have to deal with. You will know the fundamentals and may deal with pensions regularly, but may feel that you have gaps in your knowledge or that you’d like to understand the detail better.

This half day course will give more experienced practitioners the chance to look in more detail at the trickier elements of how pensions should be treated in divorce proceedings from start to finish and from the perspective of an experienced pensions expert.

A practical approach to pensions on divorce from a pensions perspective:

  • First steps in approach the pensions issue
  • Interpreting pension information
  • When to take actuarial advice
  • What to do if your client won’t take advice
  • Practical approaches to offsetting
  • Apportionment for period of marriage

  • Uniformed Services (police, armed forces and firefighters) – features of these specialised pension schemes together with detailed worked examples.
  • Current issues including changes to the public sector schemes, state pension scheme proposals and Lifetime Allowance, tax charges and pension sharing
