Course Advocacy Before the District Judge


Aimed at newly or recently qualified solicitors, this course provides an opportunity to prepare and try out your advocacy in a simulated court room. Using realistic case studies, advocates will prepare and deliver (or oppose) typical contested applications, in a risk-free environment. 

What you will learn

Develop and practise the following advocacy skills:

  • How to plan and deliver your submissions
  • Rebutting your opponent’s submissions
  • Courtroom etiquette and what Judges expect from you
  • Persuasiveness and thinking ‘on your feet’

Try out typical contested applications (both as applicant and respondent):

  • Summary judgement/striking out
  • Disclosure of documents
  • Requests for Information

Seminar content:

  • The court’s case management powers
  • Rules and Practice Directions relating to applications
  • Deciding what you must prove
  • Staying in control under pressure
  • Feedback and tips from the trainer
