Course Continuing Competence for Residential Conveyancing Solicitors

The SRA’s continuing competence regime requires solicitors to reflect not just on their legal knowledge but also on the four competences identified by the SRA: ethics, professionalism and judgment; technical legal practice; working with other people; and managing themselves and their own work. A yearly declaration that you have ‘reflected on and addressed your learning and development needs’ is required, with this declaration being made for the first time at the end of the 2016-17 CPD year.

As the four competences show, solicitors need to know not only the law but also the commercial context in which it is applied. This course considers the competences from the particular perspective of residential conveyancing solicitors, identifying key skills and knowledge relevant to the role.

This new half day course is designed to assist residential conveyancing solicitors in the relatively early stages of their careers, or solicitors who may want a refresher session, to:

  • Understand in outline the form and content of the competence statement
  • Consider the ethical issues that affect residential conveyancers
  • Consider the key risk areas in residential conveyancing and how to mitigate those risks
  • Deal with difficult clients and colleagues
  • Consider what steps to take if something goes wrong
  • Reflect on their own strengths and limitations
