Course Firearms and Offensive Weapons: A Guide for Prosecutors and Defence Lawyers

One area of criminal practice which can usually be depended on to lead to charges is firearms. The law governing firearms and offensive weapons has undergone many changes in recent years, such as criminalising weapons which were formerly legitimate, creating new offences, new definitions and increasing sentences. This brand new half-day course (which will also cover offensive weapons and bladed articles) is aimed at prosecutors and defence practitioners from the police station to the Crown Court.

Delegates will leave:

  • Understanding the main definitions and offences
  • Being able to identify any defences
  • Familiar with case law and sentencing case law
  • Able to assess expert evidence
  • Knowing which offences are indictable-only
  • Aware of the penalties on conviction, especially where sentence is affected by age or carries a mandatory minimum sentence
